Belgium looking to join A1 GP
Belgium seems set to join the A1 GP grid next season as two entrepreneurs set out to build a team.
Bart Dejonghe and Matty Paquay are at Zandvoort for the opening round of the season to meet the A1 GP management. The aim is to have a Belgian team on the grid in time for the 2007/2008 championship.
Paul Cherry, General Manager of Franchising A1 GP, said: "I have been working with this group of entrepreneurs for about six months now and believe that they are building a business model that would enable them to profitably run the A1 GP Team franchise for Belgium."
Sponsors will now be sought prior to the selection of a team and drivers.

Mika Salo told on Urheilukanava's Motorsport Evening yesterday that he is now establishing A1GP Team Finland.
Car will be run by ADR on the 1st season but the plan is to have a full-finn team in future.
Salo is now looking for funding so it's not 100% proof that Finland will be in 2007/2008 grid, but I hope he'll found enough sponsors.

A1 Team Thailand?
How would you like to watch a Thai team race in 11 events around the world live on TV? 'Motoring' talks to racer Chawakij Boughey about his greatest dream
- Who is he?
Chawakij Bobby Boughey is a 24-year-old Thai race driver currently competing in the Asian Formula Renault Challenge.
His racing career debuted with the 2004 Formula BMW Asia and he picked rookie of the year award at the end of that season. In 2005 he won outright his first race, a Bahrain F1 support race, and was the highest finishing Asian driver in the year's end Formula BMW World Final.
Last year, he moved up the Asian Formula Renault Challenge, racing a 200hp-plus single seater with European based Prema Power Team. This year, a Chinese company bought the naming rights to the team to become March 3 Racing Team and continued to sign him on.
- Just why do we know so little about him?
Bobby is not a model/actor/pop singer who lends his fame to the motorsport nor is he a product of B50m international rally marketing - he's not a celebrity, not yet.
Also, perhaps, because he didn't go by the name Chawakij from the beginning, so people thought he was just another farang racing with a Thai license.
He was only given the name "Chawakij" - meaning activities of speed - by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn last year. Even Keanu Reeves can't match Bobby's association with the word "speed".
- Okay, what's the idea with A1 GP?
The A1 Grand Prix pits nation against nation in what they call the World Cup of Motorsport. Every national team competes on equal basis with the same basic 570hp single seater race car - just one notch down from F1.
Last season (2005-2006) saw 23 nations competing - six of them Asian, namely China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan and Singapore - in 11 events in 10 countries.
The basic idea is that having an A1 GP Team Thailand can be a very cost-effective way to promote our country - not just for motorsport, but tourism as a whole.
Bobby isn't the first person to think this way, but he's the first man to take the idea and go to see the A1 GP organiser about it.
- Umm... it must be expensive...
No, not really. David Claire, CEO of A1 GP Asia-Pacific, told Bobby that Thailand can run a team for under US$4m (less than B132m) for a whole race season.
By quick calculation, that's roughly B12m per race. A1 GP claims a worldwide live TV audience of 84 million viewers in 120 countries - that can be converted to an advert cost of around B1.57 per viewer.
- A Thai team?
Claire thinks that would be great and lots of people would like to see Thailand back in top level motorsports. Bobby reminded us that Thailand is actually the first Asian country to have a world-class racer back in the 1930s - the late Prince Bira.
Bobby explained that we could have 1-3 talented Thai racers preferably with an experienced Thai team manager. The car needs to be run by a European outfit for its extensive experience in similar level of racing and could include a few apprentice Thai technicians.
- Just how talented the drivers need to be?
There's no minimum requirement to drive an A1 car, but Bobby pointed out that ideally he or she should have a few years in single-seater racing and preferably with F3 experience as that is the highest level down from A1 and F1.
Some current A1 racers have managed to move up from even the light Formula BMW. He told us that experience in F3 is valuable for you have to learn a lot of car set-up that you need to do in A1 and F1.
- Is Bobby good enough to do A1?
Bobby found out his racing talent five years ago when he had a shot at the Formula BMW Asia scholarship. He passed the tests, won the scholarship for two consecutive years before moving on to a more powerful race car.
His current Formula Renault car has over 200hp and is very similar to an F3.
On the personal side, he showed his commitment to being a professional by dropping his studies at Pepperdine University in California, enrolled in race schools and has been building up his physique to withstand the high physical loads a race car can throw at him. He even quit drinking and smoking.
We'd be imprudent to say he's the one, but we believe Bobby is in a good position to take up the challenge.
- So, when will we see the Thai A1 team?
Hang on, Bobby hasn't found enough sponsors to do that as yet. But as a start, he's already gotten a green light from the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand (RAAT) to represent Thailand in all his international races from now on.
He does not envision a Thai A1 team until the 2008-2009 season for he'd prefer to get some F3 experience under his belt in the mean time.
But Bobby and Claire are planning to bring the A1 race car to Thailand later this year and put on a show to celebrate His Majesty the King's 80th birthday later this year.
Zitat:
Pete Da Silva said we don't have to expect new teams for season 3. They now have the rule that if a team can't make it to the tests, it's out, unless it can organise it's own tests. For season 4, the first announcements for new teams will be made very soon ( September/ October ).
